Details of the tour

The Salar de Uyuni is one of Bolivia's great attractions. On this tour, we will depart from San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, and for 4 days we will travel through a very diverse Andean landscape, passing through the desert of Salvador Dalí, the thermal springs of Polque, the field of Geysers, the spectacular altiplano lagoons, the Eduardo Avaroa Natural Park and ending at the great Salar de Uyuni, where we will also have the opportunity to contemplate one of the most magical sunrises in existence and the white immensity of the Salar desert, which captivates forever.

"DAY 1 - Salvador Dalí Desert, Polque Hot Springs, Geysers and Colorada Lagoon

We will leave San Pedro around 6:30 a.m., where we will pick you up at the hotel with the minibus that will take us to the border with Bolivia. From this point we will follow our circuit in a 4×4 6-seater vehicle.

The first stop will be in the white and green lagoons and we will continue to the desert of Salvador Dalí, a large plateau surrounded by imposing mountains that resemble the paintings of the famous painter.

We continue the path to the thermal springs of Polque, where we will enjoy a bath in natural thermal water, while the outside temperature is very low, a very relaxing experience.

The next stop is the field of the morning sun geysers, full of fumaroles and small geysers that make it a unique landscape, where we can feel the force of nature.

Finally we will reach the red lagoon, one of the most spectacular on the plateau, next to which we will have dinner and spend the night in a hostel.

"DAY 2 - Valley of the Rocks, Lagoons, Canyons of the Inca and Sora and Andean Fauna

We will have breakfast at 8 a.m. and go to the valley of the rocks, where we will find peculiar natural formations. We will continue our route between the different lagoons until we reach the Vinto lagoon and the Kanal lagoon, where, after a brief stop, we will continue the route to the Inca canyon and the Sora canyon.

On the way to our lodging, we will appreciate the Andean flora and especially the fauna, where we will see llamas, vicuñas and even foxes. At sunset, we will go to our hostel, where we will have dinner and rest.

"DAY 3 - Uyuni Salt Flat, Train Cemetery and Salt Museum

On this day, we'll wake up at 5 o'clock for breakfast and start the way to the salar, which is very close and so we arrive to see one of the most magical sunrises in the world.

With the clarity of the day, we can see its immensity and make a first stop on Incahuasi Island, a small mountain populated by huge cacti. We continue our way to the eyes of the salar, small water holes up to two meters deep that alter the landscape.

In this area we will learn how salt is extracted and refined from the area that is used to make different figures that are sold in the city of Colchani, a small town that besides being the door to the salt flat also houses the "salt museum" We will visit.

We will visit the city of Colchani and the train cemetery before resuming our trip to the city of Uyuni, where we will make a two-hour stop to eat and rest and start the way back to San Pedro. Our last stop of the day will be at Villa Mar, where we will have dinner and spend the night.

"DAY 4 - Villa Mar - Border - San Pedro de Atacama

We'll wake up at 5 a.m. to start the last leg of the way back to San Pedro. The first journey takes 4 hours to reach the border. During our tour we will say goodbye for the last time to the incredible landscapes we visited.

We will seal passports at the border and on the Chilean side a minibus will be waiting for us to make the last journey. We will arrive in San Pedro at 12:30.

FAQs

At what times of year can the Mirror Effect be seen?
The Mirror Effect, also known as reflections, is the phenomenon that causes the sky to be reflected in the salar itself. It occurs during the rainy season, during the months of January, February and March.
How cold is it during the ride?
Remember that the tour to Uyuni occurs at high altitude in an isolated area; therefore, during winter, especially at night, it is very cold. These are the average temperatures according to the months of the year: - From October to March the temperatures are warmer, during the day it can exceed 20ºC , during the night it is below 5ºC. - From April to September the temperatures are lower, during the day approximately 10ºC), but during the night they decrease to -5ºC. It is highly recommended to wear many warm clothes during the months of June, July and August, as these months are especially cold.
How much luggage can I take?
Each ride can carry a maximum weight of 18 kg and will go to the roof of the 4x4, protected by a waterproof insulation. We recommend taking a small backpack for camera, water, snacks etc. Items located on the roof can only be accessed upon arrival at the accommodation.
How are the tour accommodations?
The accommodations are basic hostels, as it is an isolated area. The first night's accommodation is in a salt lodge. Unlike many trips to Uyuni, and to offer a better service, the salt lodge is smaller and with better common areas and more bathrooms, a better option than the standard salt lodge (subject to availability). On the second night, the accommodation is a standard family hostel near Laguna Colorada. In none of the accommodations is there heating in the rooms and the nights are a bit cold, so you have the option to request a sleeping bag leaving a note on the reservation and paying the rent on arrival.
